“I am truly sorry this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience,”Newell said.

Valve Corporation co-founder and managing director Gabe Newell has sent a public message revealing that credit card numbers and other personal information have been compromised during an attack on its Steam service.

Valve advises that all of its customers monitor their credit card activity, as those numbers were inside a database that the hackers penetrated. The Steam Forums are currently closed, however the service remains online.

“We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating,” informed Newell. “We don’t have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.”

The database exposed during the attack “contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information.”

Though gaming support on the operating system could be considered as dead, Valve has announced that its Steam, gaming digital downloading service, will be headed to Apple’s Mac operating systems as soon as next month, which is April. Taping into a market that has been long ignored by, mostly, every gaming front.

The launch of Steam on Macs will bring with it Mac-friendly versions of Valve’s latest releases, including “Left 4 Dead 2,” “Team Fortress 2,” “Counter-Strike,” “Portal,” and the “Half-Life”, to the Mac. However, the most important feature of the program is the new “Steam Play” feature which allows PC and Mac users to play games with or against each other online.

“Steamworks for the Mac supports all of the Steamworks APIs, and we have added a new feature, called Steam Play, which allows customers who purchase the product for the Mac or Windows to play on the other platform free of charge,” explained Valve’s director of business development, Jason Holtman. “For example, Steam Play, in combination with the Steam Cloud, allows a gamer playing on their work PC to go home and pick up playing the same game at the same point on their home Mac.”

Holy cow… This maybe a bit too soon, but has Microsoft just debuted a Left 4 Dead 2 trailer during its E3 Press Conference. There wasn’t much details given at the conference about the game, but according to end the trailer the game will be releasing on November 17th of this year. The game is set to release exclusively for Xbox 360 and PC.

Lets face it, Left 4 Dead is a really great game. That’s why Valve was way beyond candid on revealing its latest sales mark reached.

Today, at Valve’s GDC presentation, it was revealed that their cooperative zombie shooter Left 4 Dead has now surpassed the 2.5 million copies sold mark since its November debut, which Michael Booth revealed today.

Valve has also revealed that the sales tally as PC and Xbox 360 sales, and they don’t count digital distribution sales.
