Heavy Rain has achieved both critical and commercial success — its, undoubtedly, one of the industries most “unexpected” breakout hits. Though we’re still awaiting the next downloadable expansion, the development team at Quantic Dream have announced an update giving Heavy Rain “PlayStation Move” support.

As previously stated, Heavy Rain was initially designed for use with the PlayStation Move, but the game ended up being ready for market long before the motion control device was released. However, there hasn’t been any word on the exact release date for the updated, but Move will go on sale this coming September.

Heavy Rain was develop as an “interactive drama”. However, developer Quantic Dream have plans to push Heavy Rain as another form of entertainment, a movie. According to Deadline, Quantic Dream are close to signing a movie deal with Unique Features.

Unique Features is the newest venture of former New Line Cinema executives Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne. That in mind, Unique has an exclusive deal with Warner Bros. giving the studio first-look rights to its pictures.

It’s official: Heavy Rain is a hit — it has received both commercial and critical praise, and it has now sold over 1 million units worldwide. With it exceeding sales expectations, Sony have announced that, during its first five weeks on the market, Heavy Rain has sold over 1 million units worldwide.

“It has been hugely gratifying to see the positive response that Heavy Rain has received from gamers” said Quantic Dream’s David Cage. “It shows that it is possible to create games that break with convention, games that seek to tell complex stories, and games that can inspire unexpected emotions in players – and that such games can be commercial as well as critical successes.”

Heavy Rain boasted a solid opening month in February, selling 219,000 units. Like previous titles developed by Quantic Dream, Heavy Rain eschews normal game genres for a more cinematic approach, focusing on complex storytelling and emotion via realistic graphics.

Prepare your HDD because, just like many other games on the system, Heavy Rain requires an install; respectively to help eliminate in-game hiccups. According to JustPushPlay, Heavy Rain’s installation will set you back exactly 4.5 gigabytes of space, however exactly how long the install will take, is still a mystery.

It shouldn’t came as any surprise that Quantic Dream would doing this after Heavy Rain’s nude scene controversy. In order to keep Heavy Rain from getting banned in other regions of the world, Quantic Dream is censoring the game, said the game’s exclusive producer.

In an interview pushing Heavy Rain towards the Japanese market, Guillaume de Fondaumiere told viewers that although Heavy Rain is designed for the mature audience, it may not be expected everywhere, and for that, the developer will be censoring it for those regions.

“We wanted to have pretty much the same game everywhere, be it Europe, in the United States, or in Japan, of course, with slight adaptions,” he said. “But I don’t think the changes we made will make a big difference; those are real modular things. We felt the need to adapt the content to the culture.”

Heavy Rain is scheduled to launch early in 2010, exclusively for the PlayStation 3.

Speaking exclusively to Gamesindustry.biz, Ubisoft Game Designer Michael de Plater acknowledges that the festive holiday season is a “brutal” duration to release new IPs and that many good games could fall wayside as a result.

“It’s a bit tough to launch a new IP exactly at Christmas when you’re head-to-head with blockbuster sequels. It’s interesting to see a number of big titles, like Heavy Rain, being targeted at 2010 to avoid the Christmas rush,” he explained. “And Ubisoft’s got Ruse coming out in 2010. Even God of War 3′s in 2010, that’s how brutal it is. I mean, you’ve got Assassins Creed 2, Modern Warfare 2, Mass Effect 2.”

“To me, it’s been a period of enormous change, and the last four years I would say has been the time when games have actually surpassed movies as the premium blockbuster entertainment,” he continues.

Speaking of, the summer is basically an empty season for video games. I don’t know why developers and publishers can’t just space things out because, like I said, the summer season is basically empty for video games.

This holiday season we’re going to have to dig deep into our pockets to find the money for buying video games, like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Brutal Legend, and Assassin’s Creed II. But, the developers behind Heavy Rain want their project to be really successful. And have push the game back beyond the holiday rush.

When speaking to GI.biz in a interview, Quantic Dream co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumiere stated that the Holiday ’09 release date for Heavy Rain was “a very crowded place”. As an affect, they have pushed Heavy Rain into 2010.

“Purely from my perspective, most publishers today realise that it’s not ideal to release a new IP or a new genre just before Christmas,” he said in the interview. “It’s a very crowded place to be, and certain games need more space to live their life. Everybody at working on the project, both at Quantic and Sony, believe this is the right time.”

More info should be revealed during Gamescom in Cologne next month on its new release date.

Anyway, according to PSXExtreme, SCEA has sent out a press release announcing Killzone 2 as the leader of the pack for this year’s 2009 PlayStation 3 blockbusters. As part of the announcement, SCEA confirmed that a new TV advertising campaign would kick off this week; it’s called the ‘Bullet’ commercial.

And they say the ‘new ad was rendered entirely in-engine via the incredible power of the Killzone 2 engine and PS3 technology to preserve the unique visual and epic gameplay experience.’

“The game [Killzone 2] ushers in an unprecedented year of titles to hit the PlayStation platform throughout the year – mean this year- including the blockbuster exclusives Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, inFamous, MAG, Heavy Rain, God of War III and MLB 09 The Show.

According to Gamekyo, when seeing the a small part of Sony Computer Entertainment conference rehearsal, their almost certain that a new trailer of Heavy Rain for the PlayStation 3 with ingame footage was will be broadcasted at the conference in Lepzig. They also confirm that a new trailer of LittleBigPlanet will be shown and that Pete Smith, producer of the game, will be giving new some details about his game on stage. They also said that the conference will focus on the new SingStar for the PlayStation 3.
