Obsidian has maintained a clear emphasis on choice, citing a dynamic dialogue system, flexible mission structure and multifaceted narrative that are constantly informed by the player’s decisions. Fine words indeed, but now that Alpha Protocol has finally arrived, does it actually deliver?

Meet Michael Thorton, an agent newly recruited by the eponymous covert ops organisation Alpha Protocol; he’s drugged, tested and trained before being sent on a mission to assassinate the leader of an Islamic terrorist cell. His job becomes a little trickier, however, when he finds himself at the centre of an international conspiracy involving government corruption, illegal arms trafficking and mass murder. Betrayed, disavowed and hunted by his own country, Michael goes rogue as he searches for answers.

This is only the beginning of Alpha Protocol’s dense and intricately tangled narrative, one that encompasses a truly astonishing amount of variables. Every decision the player makes has consequences, either immediate or long-term, that can significantly alter the storyline. Which mission did you choose to complete first? Did you complete the previous mission without civilian casualties, or without being seen at all? Did you execute that small-time arms dealer, or spare his life in return for information? Even seemingly trivial actions have deceptive magnitude – a small mistake can easily develop into a catastrophe, while an exemplary display of tact or skill can bring unexpected windfalls down the line.

Most of the crucial decisions are made during conversations with other characters, through the game’s Dialogue Stance System. This functions a little like Mass Effect 2’s dialogue wheel, as you are given a choice of reactions that steer the dialogue in particular directions, but the comparison isn’t entirely fair; whereas ME 2’s interactions were all measured by a simple moral dualism, Alpha Protocol’s system is considerably more complex. You can choose to be Aggressive, Suave or Professional, but there’s no universally “good” or “bad” approach – every character you encounter has their own individual temperament, and it’s up to you to judge which stance is most appropriate to the situation. Glib one-liners might impress your flirtatious handler, but they’ll hardly score you any points with a dour, tight-lipped corporate kingpin. The fact that you’re only given a few seconds to make each selection lends urgency to the exchange whilst keeping the dialogue running smoothly.

With so many tenuous relationships in flux, the storyline is continually overwrought with plot twists, double-crosses and lurid liaisons, but such devices are hardly unusual for the genre. The amount of planning makes the execution feel entirely deliberate; the developer knows, for example, that you won’t remember half the shady characters and organisations that are hurled at you in rapid succession, and the game helpfully arranges them into Intel dossiers that become more detailed as you discover more. You can even buy additional Intel between missions that will help you understand your adversary’s history and psychology, giving you a better idea of how to approach them. There are so many subplots and hidden agendas in play that by the time you’ve completed the game, you will only have experienced about a third of the entire content – Obsidian clearly wants to encourage substantial replay value by the sheer volume of narrative to explore.

As far as choice is concerned, Alpha Protocol’s plot and dialogue tick all the boxes. Unfortunately, the gameplay is altogether less innovative – once you actually jump into the action, the cracks become all too visible. When starting a new game, you can select from a number of basic ‘classes’ with pre-determined stats, or you can distribute them yourself if you prefer; specialties include stealth, hand-to-hand combat, sabotage, gadgetry and proficiency with each of the game’s firearms. While such customisation effectively allows you to mould the gameplay to your own personal tastes, it’s much too restrictive, as Michael is rendered almost comically inept at any skill he hasn’t invested points in. Stealth agents who bulk up their accuracy with the pistol will be silently capping guards in no time, but when forced into a firefight, they’re about as effective with a shotgun as Elmer Fudd. Forcing the player to engage their strengths and avoid their weaknesses is understandable to a degree, but the stats you’ve chosen too often play a greater role than your actual skill – Michael is supposed to be an accomplished agent, after all. You can, however, customise your weapon loadout with barrels, sights, clips and accessories that improve precision and stability, in order to counteract the worst areas of ineptitude.

The cover system is also unreliable; parts of your body are exposed to the enemy even while you’re crouched behind a barrier, so you’ll still occasionally take damage. Once you “stick” to a wall or column, it’s also a little tricky to detach yourself, which can be incredibly frustrating if you’ve been biding your time for the perfect ambush. In spite of this, however, you won’t encounter much resistance from the enemy – almost by way of compensation, the game’s AI is hopelessly dim-witted and oblivious to your actions. Even if two guards are standing only a few metres apart, you can sneak up on one and drop him with a thud and a muffled cry without the other ever noticing, as long as his back is turned. Their peripheral vision is minimal; they might as well be humming with their fingers in their ears as they patrol in fixed patterns, stopping at regular intervals as if inviting an assailant to garrotte them from behind. There’s still a certain satisfaction to slipping into a room and clearing it without being seen, but an element of unpredictability would have made success more rewarding and less contrived.

The game’s graphics, which utilise Unreal Engine 3, are generally solid – be it sun, snow or sandstorms, each environment is well designed and features some striking weather and lighting effects. There are, however, moments when the camera breaks through walls, and some models have poorly-formed shadows that don’t give them a proper sense of weight. The facial animations don’t quite meet the emotional delivery of the dialogue, but it’s a triviality given that most of the characters are spies with well-trained poker faces. The worst offender by far is the bump mapping; the textures take so long to load that you’ll still see them being gradually applied well after the mission or cutscene has started. It’s incredibly distracting to watch a room full of unidentifiable shapes slowly come into focus while you’re trying to get your bearings. The game’s menus, however, are admirably stylish, particularly those in your PDA.

Closing Statement:

While any combination of these faults might ordinarily be regarded as a deal breaker, Alpha Protocol is far more than the sum of its parts. The gameplay and visuals would certainly have benefited from further fine-tuning, and yet the experience holds together with almost inexplicable cohesion. This is most likely due to the game’s exceedingly involved narrative, which exhibits far more polish; if only Obsidian had been as conscientious in all areas of its design, the game would have been truly engrossing. As it is, Alpha Protocol isn’t quite the paragon of self-determination that it had hoped to be – instead, it’s an intriguing hybrid whose divergent plot is the primary incentive for subsequent playthroughs. It’s a new franchise with room for refinement and growth; hew away the jagged edges and there’s definite potential for a sequel.

Final Score: 7.0

<g:plusone size="medium" count="1" href="http://www.gamercenteronline.net/2010/06/12/alpha-protocol-review-weapon-of-choice/"></g:plusone>

Brain Size Can Predict Your Gaming Performance

Nintendo

PlayStation

Tech

Top Stories Headlines

Xbox

Action

Add new tag

Brain

Cerebral Cortex

Cognition

Crackdown

Game

Gamer

Games

Health

History

Neuron

Professor

Psychology

Space Combat

Star Trek Games

Starfleet Command Series

University of Illinois

University of Illinois system

University of Pittsburgh

Video game

Have you ever sucked at a game? So they go out to check out the distress call and when on the ship they find out that the ship is over run by an alien race called Necromorphs, who dependent upon necrotic flesh.

In this game Isaac has alot of weapons at his disposal and one of the many weapons that you will have is the plasma cutter. This weapon is used to, as it’s name suggested, cut enemy’s up with a plasma blast or ray. Another weapon in the game is the industrial lasers, which is basically a laser. Also each weapon in the game has a alternate attack or secondary fire, which, thank god, has just as much usage as the weapons primary fire. The types of weapons to pick from are flamethrowers, lasers, saws and, what they didn’t show you in trailers, Isaac’s vista of telekinetic abilities which allow to slow down time and etc.

One of the many things that make this game epic is the ability for you to build your own weapons from blueprints that can be found all over the game. This also goes for ammo, items, and suit upgrades but, nothing is more important then upgrading your suit because it is crucial to your survival in the game. Upgrading your suit also gives it some nice graphical upgrades to “the Rig”, which really adds to the games replay ability.

Nothing is more important in this game than it’s zero-gravity environments which adds a nice graphical and technical aspect to the game. When you enter the games zero-gravity environments one of the first things that you will notice is that the hologram display on Issac’s back will now show how much oxygen you have remaining. One of the coolest thing we saw when you are in this mode is the ability leap across entire rooms, and shoot enemies floating around in the air. This really adds to the zero-gravity feel and it makes you feel like you’re in space.

Closing statement:

For a now fan of this game, this game has everything that you would want for a video game from epic boss battles, big guns and even a crazy death gallery. If you are yet to play the game or you haven’t read up on the game, the game take place in a world of Norse Mythology, which is basically Viking mythology. In the game you play a Baldur, a Norse god who has just recovered from a pretty severe injury in battle. And you are one of many race of cybernetic enhanced humans, which is trying defend the human race from an army of machines.

When you first put in the game you’ll have to pick one of five classes of characters and they are Berserker, Defender, Champion, Commando, and Bioengineer. Which if you pick right should help your strategy in the game because each class specialize in different weapons and skills. In the game you battle against all type of Supernatural monsters using your superhuman abilities, which very from by different stages.

This brings me to the story, it’s sometimes hard to tell the relationship between each character, but if there was a relationship it would be very hard to see. Also at the end of the game, not to spoil the ending, the game really doesn’t feel like it ended at all. It’s like who ever wrote the story of the game really wanted you to know that there was going to be another game. Personally I was hoping for an ending much like Gears but, instead we got a ending for a cartoon that is much longer then it should be.

To add to this problem the controls don’t help the game, anyone can tell that the games controls aren’t at all good because the control that you’ll normally use to control the camera is instead used for some kind of attack. But, it isn’t all that bad because after sometime playing the game you’ll get the hang of the controls, that’s after you fully understand which controls does what. This also makes way for another problem in the game, which is the camera, without a right way to move that camera the game is temped to move the camera for and, not like you and me, the camera really doesn’t know where or how to move the camera.

In terms of gameplay the game keeps you now on your feet, the game is full with nonstop action with every waking moment full with some kind. Another important part of gameplay is the types of enemies you face in the game. For a freeroam type of game this game really doesn’t have a strong verity of opponents. There’s basically three types of enemies and they are robots, zombies and big troll-like machine an that’s it. This also cooks up for another problem in the game, an that’s the way you take on these enemies in the game. There really is no strategy change per enemies period.

Final: C+

<g:plusone size="medium" count="1" href="http://www.gamercenteronline.net/2008/09/13/too-human-review-is-this-another-haze/"></g:plusone>

Too Human Will Take 15 Hours

Xbox

Action

Denis Dyack

Dyack

Eddas

Game

Kikizo

Silicon Knights

Too Human

Video game

In an recent interview with video gaming site Kikizo, Denis Dyack, set down and talked with them about the upcoming game Too Human and it’s campaign. What is new to the party is the maps and the odd attempt to change up some of the previous games modes to make them fresh and new to the user. Controls might not be as good as using a keyboard and mouse, but the 360 does a nice job at trying to keep the speed of the unreal games while still giving a lot of support to keep your eyes focused for frags. So yes the game runs fast and furious but not enough to make the game hard to play. The rest of the controls feel very good, with swapping weapons being just a breeze. Visually the game looks good, while not having the best visuals out there it does have a decent frame rate with no real slowdowns at all. Same can be said about the sound quality, with the only annoyance being that they AI likes to spout out one liners that are just terrible.

Fans of course will be use to the modes and game play elements of the franchise. Newcomers wont have a problem as well getting in on this. It has a lot to offer especially in the online department, however, the single player is kind of a failure in my opinion. The very odd try at a story mode, spanning four chapters with numerous missions in between. Modes consist of capture the node and capture the flag as actual events in a war style story that is just in poor taste. I know what they are doing in a sense, getting you ready to take your onslaught online. But it would of been best to just scrap a story and just make some tutorial levels. The saving grace in single player is the addition of online co-op which makes playing through the story mode more enjoyable since you actually have someone to help you out on some of the more difficult missions. Vehicles are back and in full force as well. Vehicles made their first appearance in Unreal Tournament 2004 and the roster has only grown. Of course the controls are nothing to drop your jaw at though. Meaning that you point your targeting reticule to an area, push forward on the left stick and your vehicle will try to make its way there, and hopefully not explode. It’s when doing battle in small areas that this can be a bit touchy due to the lack of movement. You also for some reason cant move the canon on the Goliath while moving which is kind of dumb, but nothing to be too concerned with. The AI throughout is very good as well, being very ruthless and cunning to keep you pushing and pushing until you finally over come them. They will flank and use all the tricks in the book to overcome you and take you down.

Online is of course where the game shines. The amount of modes and weapons is sure to keep you clutching your controller to get one more frag in before the round ends. the maps as well are a reason to keep playing. With the 360 version coming packed with all three of the maps released thus far on PS3 and PC as download able content as well as five exclusive levels. Of course they are all built for the specific mode you are playing but all have a very good feeling to them. The game runs very smooth and of course having XBL on your side your sure to get an easy connection with tons of players. Online is the major chunk of this game and it does everything right.

So this of course is a great online experience and is user to keep you away from the modernized combat zone for awhile, having you yell out MULTI KILL!! Every time you see it flash up on your screen. So go out and pick this one up and I’m sure you will enjoy. Hopefully we will be seeing some type of user created downloads to XBL for use to have another frag fest in.

Overall – A

<g:plusone size="medium" count="1" href="http://www.gamercenteronline.net/2008/07/12/unreal-tournament-iii-xb360-review-multi-kill/"></g:plusone>

Star Wars: Battlefront III Is A Reality

Nintendo

PlayStation

Xbox

Action

Amazon.com

Free Radical

Lucasarts

Nintendo DS

Online

PlayStation 2

playstation 3

PlayStation Portable

Shia LaBeouf

Star Wars

Star Wars: Battlefront

Uwe Boll

Star Wars: Battlefront III ,as of right now, looks like it maybe a reality as somewhat states current rumors on the net. As you may already know the game takes place in the Boa Region of South America and the worlds biggest PMC, Mantel, has an army of enhanced specialized warriors who use a specialized supplement called, Nectar. And they are sent out to take out the dangerous group of rebels called The Promise Hand. In the game you happen to play as a young Mantel soldier named, Shane Carpenter, and and you soon find out that your mission is not what it appears to be, that’s where the game takes an unexpected turn. Now, Carpenter is now one of the rebels and he finds himself against some of his friends has he try’s to take out Mantel.

As I have said before "The game has a lot of promise" but, I quote from the people at IGN, "hackneyed and feeble amalgamation of concepts that the true impact or commentary that could’ve been presented in the title is immediately lost." I picked this because it’s a true, in the game UbiSoft pictures the Mantel soldiers as over hyped blood lust killers who kill because they have the lust of killing. This can be a problem because it’s hard to make a link between a blood lusted killers who are always jack up over the hype of killing. Lucky for you our friend Shane has a heart and these emotions of blood lust makes it much easier for you to make a connection with him as a person. But, sometimes you feel that he is a punk because he always talking like if he’s scared of something that’s where the game start to fall.

In every video game there somethings that makes it stand out, unfortunate for you the AI isn’t it. When playing the game we face some very serious issues with the AI, like if you are in the middle of battle (Only when you are on the side of the Promise Hand) you find yourself reviving your troops more then you should or you die because our troop decide they want to shoot you. Sometimes I think luck is never on your side in this because like your partners the enemies aren’t much smarter turning this game into a task to beat.

Great things come out of every game lucky for you the games co-op play with a mix of online play and offline play is it. This provides a smooth and relatively enjoyable experience for you and the players around. We aren’t saying that the games co-op mode doesn’t have any problems, like respawning system in the game no-one notices your wounded icon when your wounded unless someone tells you there wounded, other then that it a good co-op player.

The games visuals may look strong but, they are one of the weakest elements in the game for a Next-Gen game this game has some fair looking character models but, other then that the backgrounds can use some work. Mainly because they are bland and lacking or needing more. This is what kind of scares me because one more thing we noted was the flames in the game they are very poor, as if they didn’t spend time on this game at all.

Closing Statement:

I wish there was alot more I can say about this game but, I don’t think there alot of things featured in this game to make up for all it’s mistakes. If the game had a stronger Single player and Multi player this would be one of the best games on the Playstation 3. I’m giving this game a 5 out of 10, sorry guys hope you don’t hate me for this.
