Nickelodeon Announces New Avatar Series, The Legend of Korra

Following the success of the original series, Nickelodeon has just greenlighted a new animated series, The Legend of Korra. According to the network’s president, Brown Johnson, the series will expand the mythology of the Avatar universe — with it being set seventy years after the events of the original The Last Airbender series.

“Michael [DiMartino] and Bryan [Konietzko, series creators,] have imagined a compelling new story inspired by the Airbender mythology that they so brilliantly crafted when the TV series began,” Johnson said. “This new avatar is not only a girl, but also hot-headed, independent and ready to take on the world.”

The series follows the adventures of Korra, a “passionate, rebellious and fearless” teenager from the Southern Water Tribe, who seeks a master for the final element of Air — seeing that she’s already mastered three of the four elements.

Her travels eventually lead her to the metropolis of Republic City, an epicenter for the modern Avatar world. Although a thriving society of benders and non-benders alike, Republic City is also ridden with crime, including an anti-bending rebellion that is gaining momentum. Under the guidance of Aang’s son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training as she confronts the dangers ahead of her.

The Legend of Korra will be produced at Nickelodeon Animation Studios and is expected to begin airing sometime in 2011.

actually aang died when he was one hundred sixty something because this is seventy years after the war ended. and before the invasion katara said aang wasn't the sama as he was 1 year ago. during the invasion he was 113 years old. korra is more like 17 years old.70-17=53 53+113=166. 70=time after the ending of the war 17=age of korra 53=korra was born like 53 years after the war ended. 113= aang's age when the world ended.

Yeah, she did. She dressed up as the river spirit of a polluted river town and healed the sick and infirm under this guise, as well as destroyed the factory polluting the water. As for the ninja, she dressed up in a ninja-like garb when hunting for her mother's killer with Zuko.

Something I'm surious about in this whole situation is how advanced the technology is at this point. The Fire Nation had some pretty advanced(relatively) technology, and I'm assuming that if Zuko allowed them to keep making those pieces of technology, then being the benevloent leader, he would have shared it with the rest of the world……. So I'm just curious.

Why make stuff up? This is M. Night Shymalam's fault… He created misunderstandings with his stupid movie, and now The Legend of Korra is going to ruin the image of Avatar: The Last Airbender…. I'd rather have Nickelodeon create a 4th season to Avatar: The Last Airbender, where Aang and the other characters are alive…..

aang was physically 12 years old on the show he was in cryostasis (Process of cooling to low sub-zero temperatures) in the iceberg for 100 years meaning his body was at such a low temperature it stopped the aging process. That is why although his actual age is 112-113 in the show his physical age is only 12-13. Does that clear the whole math thing up? And also you do not know how long after the war ended aang died. He could have died a day after the series ended or 69 years after the war ended. There are too many variables to actually come to a solid conclusion, so just enjoy the show and try not to take it too serious. i doubt they meant for us to think so much about it.

No, you’re forgetting that the new avatar is born immediately after the old one died. so if that were the case then Korra would be seventy years old, and she certainly looks like a teenager to me..

Acutally as the reincarnation of the Avatar goes, Korra IS NOT Aang. She is the reincarnated spirit of their planet. If she truly was Aang reincarnated and Aang was Roku, they would never be able to commune with the past Avatars. Aang was born the same minute Roku died and since it takes 9 months for a baby to grow, Aang was not Roku. Only the Spirit passes on, not the soul of the Avatar. I also read, but they could change this, that the voice director said that none of the original series characters are still alive in this time.

No. Aang didn’t know who he was supposed to talk to; he was just told that there was someone inside the temple he should talk to. Besides, Roku was already dead before the war started (the Fire Lord let him die at a volcano so that he would be free to go forward with his invasion plans). Aang’s temple was invaded just after Aang ran away. So, even if Aang didn’t get stuck in an iceberg, it would have been way too late to speak with the living Roku. Presumably every young Avatar visits their local temple to ‘speak’ with the spirit of the previous (dead) Avatar.

It would be pretty harsh if he died the day after the series ended, since that would mean that there were 4 other avatars who were born and died in that 70 year period.

Aang had to die in his late 60′s/early 70′s or late 160′s/ early 170′s because as soon has he dies another avatar is reincarnated and the new avatar is 70 years in the future and she is a teenager. So she is atleast 13 to 18 years old. So if you subtract the numbers 13-18 from 70 it will give you how many years after the war ended (aang was 12 or 13). Then you have to add the number from the subtraction to 12 or 13 and that will give you how old aang is. For example 70-15(probable age of Korra)= 55 years after the war ended (when he was 12 or 13). 55+13=68(he probably died in) so he died whe he was 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71… all depends on the real age of Korra.

I always wonder if Aang was indeed the last airbender. I mean, there is this episode with those swamp guys when they get chased by a tornado. They never showed what caused that.

I keep watching the series over and over again waiting impatiently for the new season/series (however you wish to see it) to come out! I remember coming home after school and watching the trailer for Avatar for the first time before the first episode and watching it ever since then, never missing an episode! My mother and I can’t stop watching it! Hurry and announce when in 2011! Please! It’s killing me! Haha.

Yeah but the creators always wanted to make avatar in a more modern sci-fi world. Watch the DVD commentary’s and stuff. Plus even though they had blimps and tanks in the old one the still manged to make it look ancient. I think that they can pull it off

aang was 12 when he was frozen in the ice and a 112 when he was unfrozen “zuko spent a year chancing the avatar” and aang was 13 (113) when the war ended then new series is set 70 years in the future korra is 16-19 years old. aang has to be dead for korra to be the avatar.

aang died at the young age of 67 (167) and no older, which is really sad since he should have had lived till he was in his mid to late 80′s but then again the one earth bending avatar, Avatar Kyoshi, also died at a young age since in spirit form she seemed to looked very young, assuming that they take the form of the age at which they died. SOOOOOOOO when korra sees aang in the spirit word he shouldn’t look really old and wrinkly like a prune!

I’m glad there will be a new show, but I’m a little disappointed it will no longer follow Aang. And the show finale had Zukko interrogating his dad about his mother’s whereabouts. I kind of had it in my mind that was where the next show would start from.
