In response to the events throughout Infinity Ward, analyst Mike Hickey expects Activision to “essentially” close down the developer. Stated in an investor’s note, Hickey reveals that the development of the next Modern Warfare installment would, most likely, be spread across different studios, not tied to the franchise.
“We expect Infinity Ward studio will be essentially closed after their next map pack release, with development work on Modern Warfare 3 spread between two studios not historically tied to the franchise,” Hickey said, reports Edge.
That said, yesterday, we learned that an employee group over at Infinity Ward flied suit against Activision for unpaid royalties, bonuses, stock options, and technology-related payments. Along with, punitive damages of between $75 million and $500 million as a result of Activision’s withholding of the bonuses.
“Activision believes the action is without merit,” said a rep in response to the suit. “Activision retains the discretion to determine the amount and the schedule of bonus payments for MW2 and has acted consistent with its rights and the law at all times. We look forward to getting judicial confirmation that our position is right.”
In other words, Hickey’s statement — along with the disbandment of its work force — could already spell the future of Infinity Ward.
