It’s pretty safe to say that Universal Media Discs are a dead content format. However, during Sony’s development session at GDC, the company said that they have no plans to abandon its optical disc format. The session was about the marketplace advantages and befits that exist on all PlayStation platforms.
When discussing its portable platform, the company said its UMD format is “alive and well” and that all retail games will continue to be available on Universal Media Discs and digitally from the PlayStation Network. The company also revealed the life-to-date sales of the PSP, revealing that since it’s North American release, sales have reached 17 million total units stateside.
