CES 10: Microsoft Defends Modern Warfare Content Deal

Microsoft has done it again, delivering content on its platform before anyone else can receive it. However, unsurprisingly, there are two sides to this pandemic; one supporting Microsoft, and the other against Microsoft dishing out money for exclusives. That said, Microsoft has responded to the “non-supporters”, who are non-supportive of them with their current downloadable content deal.

“I think about it like a sports team, when you sign a star athlete for your team… when you sign that free agent, I think it makes your team better. At the end of the day, we want to turn as many people as possible into Xbox 360 fans,” said Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg when asked about the business of getting exclusive content with ArsTechnica.

“…on top of that, to take the biggest game of last year, and be the exclusive place you can get that downloadable content first, I think that’s a big deal. That’s a big reason you’d want to buy an Xbox 360 instead of another console, “he continued. “So we think from a business standpoint that’s part of the reason more people are buying the Xbox 360, more people are on Xbox Live, it’s part of the reason more people are buying Modern Warfare 2—more than two to one our box vs. the PS3.”

  • MS gets temporary lock on DLC for most games, Sony gets permalock on DLC for some games (like Arkham Asylum).

I hate exclusive content as much as the next guy, but really only when it's permasclusive (yeah I'm just making up words here). For the record, I have both a PS3 and a 360, this isn't fanboism. PS3 does some things way better than the 360, 360 does some things way better than the PS3. Now that that's out of the way, let's move on.

I was forced into buying AA for PS3 simply for the exclusive content, even though I prefer to game on 360. Obviously, this is what Sony was going for, and yeah nobody twisted my arm (at least not literally). But when I'm dropping $60 for a game, I prefer to get everything that was made for the game at release time. It's even worse these days as getting the complete game is nearly impossible in some cases (Exclusive content for buying from GameStop, exclusive content for buying from Best Buy...it's impossible short of buying two copies of the game to get the complete game at release). I'm so tired of having to research my purchase before buying it. Do I buy this game from GameStop or Best Buy? For PS3 or 360? Is there bonus content if I buy X game before Y game (a la Mass Effect 2 content for buying DA: O content)? ENOUGH! Just give me my freaking game already. The amount of time required to research has actually caused me to walk away from a purchase or two in the past, and the research required is going up by the day.

Having said that, I fully support MS's exclusive deals. It doesn't affect me either way, and yeah I'd probably be singing a different tune if I only had a PS3. But when it comes down to it, it's capitalism, love it or hate it. During the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray wars, I didn't resent Sony for winning out. I saved up my pennies, traded in a bunch of old games (and original Xbox), and bought a PS3. That's the way companies work. If you find yourself resenting the 360 because it has all the content, it might be a good idea to save up your pennies and add one to your shelf.

    Just my $0.02 (pun intended)
  • "So did Toshiba. "That makes it ok then...
  • Sounds like a press conference to me, oh wait, that's what it was. Guess they're going to say what their shareholders want to hear. Who's surprised by Microsoft dumping money into something? Real news, please. Skip the regurgitation.

The reason Xbox sells 2 to 1 over the PS3, is because a xbox last about 1 year befor it "red ring of death" so the morons go out and buys another. Microsoft got it right, get 'em hooked and make a crappy product and the will keep on forking over money for a CLEARLY DEFECTIVE product.

    Ummmm...

They were talking about the game Modern Warfare 2 selling 2-1 on the 360 over the PS3.

That has absolutely nothing to do with the red ring of death. If anything it says even more about the quality of the experience on 360 that people are willing to support it more even in the face of that certain console death.

People buy a second Xbox? What are you talking about? They have a good warranty and will provide for shipping costs and are very punctual in fixing and returning the 360 as soon as possible. Why would anyone buy a second one? Admittedly, it is rather defective in terms of the rate of these failures (I myself have received the RROD), but people like the games, the look of the 360, and the fact that more of their friends have 360's (e.g. for online multiplayer) more than the pros (different great games, free online multiplayer, etc.) of the PS3.

Personally, I'd like to see it where the competition is between hardware rather than games. On PC the competition between hardware has created the exponential technological boom this decade.

They may have a decent warranty now, but I gave the 360 a chance when it first came out. When mine started glitching up only 3 months into using it they wanted to charge me $100 to fix it and the cost of shipping. I dropped that thing fast as I could and bought a PS3.

As much as I like the idea of competition between hardware rather than games it wouldn't happen. In the console market it's not like the PC market, because consoles aren't modular as PC's are. When consoles start selling as skeleton shells that we choose to put which video cards and such then it will be about hardware. Until then game sales is the only true way.
