This demonstrably leads to utter asshats claiming one game has superiority over another simply because one has shaders and the other doesn't.

It's lamentable but but true that games which promise to be "cutting-edge" usually spend so much time in development that they simply turn out to be mediocre on release at best; over-ambitious and over-reaching at worst. You simply wish they'd just got the game out instead of messing about trying to be technically a cut above. A good game is a good game and 3+ years in dev is not a good sign of quality. Pretty, but not quality.

The thing is though, many gamers see themselves as connoisseurs of gaming and consequently will overlook gameplay in favour of some perceived technical excellence. I've seen so many games that come out looking great but because they have spent all there time on getting everything to look great, or over use of bloom/glow effects that the story suffered from it too much and thus killed the game.

I was a fan of quake 3 for so long... then along came quake 4 killing the online play of that game. And people wonder why quake 3 arena is still played way more...

If Alan Wake can pull it off being both then I will for one be impressed, but the list of games that have done that dwindle with each year, each 'new' game engine that makes the game 'unique' but really just takes it all from another game...

It's the year of the "megatexture" ... remember that.

I have to agree with Andrew, the look of so many games does not really matter when it comes down to how much you enjoy playing it. Well now its 2009 where most pc "gamers" have atleast dual core cpu's. The graphics sure looked good in their demo's in 2005/2006, is this game really going to look that good in 2010? If the game itself is not fantastic, than this game that has excited so many hardware enthusiasts over the years will be mediocre. Just another so so game.

Its still not even done yet, I remember being excited for this game when dual core cpu's just came out, they were touting the game engine as being so advanced as to do different things in different cores.
