If Wolfenstein Beats Madden, It’s Free

Wolfenstein If Wolfenstein Beats Madden, Its Free

You won’t believe this. Raven Software’s Manveer Heir has posted a message on his Twitter stating that if Wolfenstein outsells Madden 10 in the month of August, he’ll pay for your copy of Wolfenstein. However, in order to receive your money back, you’ll need to keep your copy of the receipt.

“Here’s the deal folks: if Wolfenstein outsells Madden 10 in August I will personally pay for your copy (keep your receipt) – SPREAD THE WORD,” his Twitter feed read. He didn’t go into anymore details about the throwdown with Madden 10.

However, from a bussiness stand point, this doesn’t make much sense, seeing that if the game does outsell Madden 10 in the month of August, the company, along with him, will be losing more money than they’ll receive from the game. Because when you pay the $60 dollars for your game, it goes out to many places. But, I’m not going into detail.

  • I think he knew it would never outsell madden, but he was hoping people would buy it because of that; thus allowing him more copies out the door.
  • Wolfenstein has finally arrived. The remake is as good as the original was. The WWII and occult formula still works.

Madden is the most popular game ever isn't it? So, isn't this just some guy pulling a joke? I hope it does surpass madden so this guy has to dole out tons of cash for putting his foot in his mouth.

There probably won't even be enough wolfenstein copies in circulation to match madden's total sales! lol amiright??

    Not gonna happen...
  • Is Wolfenstein any good?

How many people would really bother to keep their receipts, though? How many would bother to send in their receipts? Its the whole money back guarantee thing with a different spin. You bank on the fact that most people won't bother, or will forget. But lets I'm wrong, and everyone who read that and are aware of it keep their receipt on act on it. How many people do you think will really be aware? Even with posts like this showing up all over the place and on Digg, I'd still say its a pretty small percentage of people buying the game that'll be aware of his promise.

Assuming I'm wrong on all of the above, he could be planning his retirement from the gaming industry, and just won't back up his promise as he runs into hiding with his gobs and gobs of cash. ;)

Hmmm, couldn't 1 person with enough credit/cash just buy the difference, get all the money back, then pawn millions of copies for profit? World domination
  • bullfrock
It is "more than" not "more then" ..
  • Thank you Grammar Police.
    *sarcasm*
  • Basically 3 outcomes, either it doesn't outsell and so no deal.

It does outsell and a few people send in receipt and they pay them money back.

It does outsell and 90% of people send in receipts, company realises how royally #$@ it is and trys to play the whole thing down as a casual comment/joke.

Pretty sure even if Wolfenstein beats out Madden on one platform, Madden still ends up winning overall since it'll be on all platforms...amirite?!
  • joshtheman2kx
I think it's pretty obvious...there's no way it'll ever outsell madden.

Giving consumers the idea that they could potentially benefit in the end, will actually boost sales of the game.

But he's set a very unrealistic standard of outselling madden in it's first month, which means in the end Wolfenstein will sell a shit load more (still not enough to beat madden), he profits, doesn't pay for anyone's game, and Madden sales will be...unaffected most likely.
  • eric
could work the other way, where consumers or people who want to buy the game will wait till the end of august to see if wolfenstein outsells madden, so they wont buy the game till september. thats what i would do as i'm not really interested in the game unless it was free.
  • DoubleMs
Definitely a good business move. There's no way they will outsell Madden, but they will see a HUGE sales bump in August to try to beat it. If it was available for the Wii, it would be a challenger. However, it is not.
  • Valvador
You don't get it? Think of it this way.

They know they aren't going to sell more then Madden. Meaning this is a marketing ploy.

James, it is legally binding. Any form of communication, whether written or verbal, electronic or paper constitutes a legally binding claim. A contract is defined as "an agreement creating and defining the obligations between two or more parties" The obligations between the parties are clear (If we make sales, and you keep receipt, then they will pay for your game).

Also, try to be less of a jerk. No one is impressed by the grammar Nazi.
  • @james

and your blog is posted...where exactly?

Learn to spell. You write like you have the intelligence of a 9 year old. Most blogging tools have free spell checking tools.
The correct spellings of "bussiness", "stand point", "then" (in the comparative sense like "more than" as opposed to the sequential sense of "then"), "recieve" are business, standpoint, than, and receive. For the last one just remember "I before E except after C". I won't even get into your grammar.
Though I will say it makes plenty of business sense as it will definitely drive up sales, a twitter post isn't a legally binding contract, and a large fraction of the people even if they could get a refund wouldn't take advantage of it. Large enough that the profit from the people who do buy it outweighs the costs.
  • rwayne
For a contract to be legally binding it has to have four elements, offer, acceptance, consideration and capacity. This post on twitter has all four of those elements and therefore would be held up in court as a legally binding in most states.
  • 17 years ago when Wolfenstein 3D was released there was no such thing as a 'franchise', it was just a computer game. There was no sequels (unless you go 10 years forward). Not every game needs to be called a franchise.
  • destro
wolfenstein 3d was actually a follow up to castle wolfenstein and beyond castle wolfenstein from the early 80s.
  • mtroy_hughes
stupid. no way this leads to more game sales.
  • spidermeadows
one of my professors used to say that if you got a 0% on a test, he'd give you a 100%. the trick to this, as was the trick back then, was that you would have to attain the goal first. getting a 0% on a test is VERY hard to do unless you already know all of the answers.

this makes great sense, as they'll sell a bunch of copies that they wouldn't already sell, but there's pretty much no way that they'll sell enough to beat madden. outselling madden the month it comes out is also very very hard to do: especially for something like wolfenstein, which used to be a great franchise 15 years ago, but has since degraded into nonsense.
  • 0
Getting a 0 is easy. Don't do the test. =p. But I assume your professor would have some fail-safe in case of that. And it also depends on the kind of test. On a multiple choice test, you could very well get the correct answer by guessing (therefore you need to know the answer to not choose it). But for some reasoning / show your work type tests, you can easily get a 0 without knowing the right answer.
  • Me
"getting a 0% on a test is VERY hard to do unless you already know all of the answers"

Unless you just don't answer any of the questions. This works slightly different. Sadly, the premise is that they know they won't outsell Madden, but that if making this statement sells them even 1 more copy, they benefit in the end, as it costs them nothing to post on Twitter.
  • I doubt anything would outsell Madden the month it comes out in, unless it's launched at the very end of said month. There are too many Americans (no one else cares) that love the series.

As for Wolfenstein having degraded into nonsense over the past 15 years: nope. Return to Castle Wolfenstein still stands as the best teambased multiplayer game ever and offered a solid singleplayer experience to boot, that was 8 years ago. Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (6 years ago) was a good game too, albeit not on the level of RtCW multiplayer.

That being said, the Wolfenstein trailers - and those leaked beta videos - do not inspire great confidence into this new product. The singleplayer campaign will likely be enjoyable and decent enough, but multiplayer with shroud powers and the resistance vs axis setup (rather than allies vs axis, which would allow for more varied weaponry and scenarios) don't seem like the best of ideas.

Hopefully those shroud powers can be turned off and some modders will develop another pro mod (like ETPro). At least then it'll be a playable - and possibly enjoyable - multiplayer game.
  • Boots-of-Shame
well not everyone that buys the game will know about this. and if they don't outsell madden 10 but come close, then they make mad profits. :o [slight exaggeration]
much like the guns'n'roses release bet that dr pepper made. not everyone in the whole world will bombard the dr pepper site for a $1 can of dr pepper :P [thirsty anyone?]
  • Who Cares
No one comments. What the hell. And this idea makes no sense. They will never give out free games.
  • advertisor
Think about it like this.... If I was wanting people to buy my product the word *FREE* stands out. Now if people buy the game because there is a chance of it being free, you'll up your sales. Most people don't even keep their receipts let alone send them in for money back. I am sure they are more then aware of the %(ish).

When it comes down to it, it's all about money (as everything else in this world 100% is)... these ppl are not dumb. (the purchasers are..... they have ur money. In exchange for a product/service..)
